The winch is a xenonite device designed and built by Rocky to retrieve the 10-kilometer-long chain and the attached sampler probe from Adrian's atmosphere during the Hail Mary's dangerous low-altitude sampling operation. It was the only practical solution to a seemingly impossible engineering problem: how to recover a sample container dangling at the end of a 10-kilometer chain while the ship was held at a 30-degree angle by constant engine thrust, with the atmosphere behind the ship glowing red-hot from reflected IR light. The winch's elegant design—separating chain links rather than hauling the entire mass—turned a thirty-hour retrieval into a manageable operation, though it nearly cost Grace his life when the ship's fuel tanks ruptured during the final moments of the recovery.

Design and Purpose

The winch was Rocky's solution to a problem that had no obvious answer. The Hail Mary could not simply thrust away from Adrian to collect the sampler, because any engine burn would vaporize the chain and sample in the IR blast behind the ship. A huge spool to winch up the entire 10-kilometer length was impossible—Rocky informed Grace he could never make a spool strong enough. The idea of having the sampler climb the chain was also abandoned after experimentation. The winch solved all these problems by doing something counterintuitive: instead of pulling the chain up, it took the chain apart. Each link was rotated 180 degrees, slid across its neighbor to release it, and ejected out the side to fall into the planet below. This meant the rising chain was never tangled with a descending length, and the winch itself needed only to lift the weight of the chain above it at any given moment, not the entire 10 kilometers.

Operation and Deployment

Grace attached the winch between the chain and the anchor plate on the Hail Mary's hull during an EVA in 1.4 g's of Adrian's gravity—conditions the EVA suit was never designed for. The winch casing was made of xenonite, ensuring a strong xenonite-to-xenonite connection to the anchor plate. Grace smacked the winch a couple of times to seat it properly, then pressed the activation button. A gear popped out from the center, catching a chain link through its center, and the gear turned, dragging the chain into the internal workings. Inside, the link was rotated 180 degrees, then slid across its neighbor to release it. The freed link was ejected out the side, and the process repeated for the next link. Grace started at a safe, slow rate of about two links per second, then increased speed after confirming the first 216 links had been processed. At maximum speed, links flew out faster than Grace could count, and the chain rose at a brisk pace. The entire retrieval, which would have taken thirty hours at the slow rate, was completed in a fraction of that time.

The Critical Moment

As the sampler approached the winch, Grace slowed it to a crawl and stopped it just as the probe came within reach. He grabbed the top remaining link, unhitched it from the winch, and clipped the chain to his belt. But the ship immediately began to shudder and tilt. The hull had been damaged by the reflected IR light from Adrian's atmosphere—the outer layer of the fuel tank had melted, exposing Astrophage to space. The Astrophage, seeing Adrian, began migrating toward the planet to breed, creating uncontrolled thrust that pushed the ship in the wrong direction. Grace had to abandon the winch and scramble back to the airlock, clinging to handholds as the ship capsized. He made it inside with the sampler, but the winch and the remaining chain were lost as the Hail Mary entered a catastrophic spin that nearly killed both Grace and Rocky.

Significance

The winch represents the peak of Rocky's engineering genius and the collaborative problem-solving that defined the Grace-Rocky partnership. It was a device that turned an impossible physical constraint—the need to retrieve a 10-kilometer chain without using the engines—into a simple, elegant mechanism. Its failure was not due to any flaw in its design, but to the unforeseen consequence of the hull breach that exposed the fuel to Adrian's atmosphere.
